Grades

The main objective of this course is develop skills that will help you think critically about what you read and hear, as well as skills that will help you construct compelling arguments. Learning these skills is no different than learning other skills — you have to take the initiative and put in the work.

Accordingly, your grade is determined by your investment in the course. This page outlines four investment plans, in order of increasing expectations.

Participation

Consistently positive classroom participation will boost a grade by a one-third step. Inconsistent participation or disruptive classroom behavior will drop a grade by a one-third step. Consult the standards for exceptional and satisfactory participation.

For example, suppose you complete the moderate investment plan, which has an expected grade of B. If you consistently make positive contributions to class discussions, you will end up with a B+; if you participate inconsistently or behave in a disruptive manner, you will end up with a B-.
